Alterations + Additions in Surrey Hills

With a south-facing, sloping backyard backing on to a train line, our clients were underutilising their backyard and were (understandably) seeking a fresh new approach to get the best out of their Californian Bunglalow home.

A family with two young boys, there was a clear vision to add a new master suite and open plan living wing facing north to wrap around and shelter a new pool, terrace and lawn from the impact of the train line.  This also had the added benefit of minimising the interventions within the original house.

Environmental and acoustic performance was a focus and K+AR worked with a specialist acoustic consultant to design a high-performing building envelope which included an insulated, heated concrete slab, mass brickwork, high density plasterboard and UPVC double-glazed windows. The contrast in colours and materials of the two ‘wings’ combined with natural timber both internally and externally gives a calm and relaxed feel to the new rooms.
