Pete Wilson Landscape Architecture (PWLA)

This home is as much about its landscape as it is the architecture, reflecting the lifestyle of the family who will inhabit it. The family dedicates much of their time to their garden, engaging in activities such as planting, foraging, and preparing food they have grown themselves. The design of the building responds to this connection by wrapping around the irregular site, ensuring that every living space enjoys a direct relationship with, and view of, the garden.

With a strong focus on sustainability and cost-efficiency, careful attention was given to selecting local, low-embodied energy materials. This included salvaging messmate and oregon beams from both the original home and the neighbouring house being demolished to be utilized in the new build. Solar access has been optimized through appropriately sized overhangs based on the building's orientation, while cross-ventilation and sloped ceilings with operable clerestory windows will support effective heat management. The design also incorporates on-site water harvesting and a large solar array.

Surrounded by extensive landscaping and predominantly indigenous plantings, the home will integrate seamlessly into its natural environment.

Site Plan

"Living in a coastal town we wanted a simple but stylish house with a beach shack feel. Kate and Andrew listened to our ideas and elevated them with clever, thoughtful design. The outcome was a home that is perfect for our site, perfect for our family and perfect for our lifestyle. Throughout the process they were always responsive, humble and enthusiastic. We cannot speak highly enough of K+ARchitects!".
