This three-level home, designed for a dynamic, intergenerational family, is nestled on a 1,500 sqm north-facing, sloping site in Balwyn. The residence is thoughtfully designed to maximize its surroundings, featuring six bedrooms, five bathrooms, a gym, sauna, home theatre, wine cellar, rumpus room, formal living room, pool, pool cabana, powder room, tennis court, and a serene tea room. Integrated with advanced building automation systems, the home efficiently manages climate, lighting, security, audio-visual functions, solar energy, and battery storage.

Drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese courtyard homes and gardens, the design incorporates timeless principles that blend privacy with connection. Elements such as walls, pathways, natural landscapes, and sculptures carefully curate a journey of curiosity, surprise, and discovery. Landscaped courtyards punctuate the home’s layout, providing not only natural light and ventilation but also offering a seamless progression of visual connections.

These courtyards act as framed views to nature, encouraging moments of reflection and engagement with the environment. The strategic layering of stone-clad walls and courtyards echoes the design philosophy of balancing the solid with the void, the stationary with the moving—creating a dynamic interplay between space and time.

Feng Shui principles also guided the placement of functional spaces and key elements, aligning the design to enhance wellbeing, energy flow, and prosperity throughout the home.

One of the aspects we’re most proud of is how the design integrates the surrounding landscape and natural light into the interior experience. Given the large scale of the home and the narrow shape of the block, there was a risk of creating a dark, inward-facing environment. However, we’ve successfully maintained a bright, airy, and open feel, with natural light flooding the space from front to back, ensuring a seamless connection to the outdoors.
