This project presented numerous design challenges, including inadequate accommodation for a family of four, a dark, small, and south-facing living space, and a compact site built up to two boundaries. With these constraints, our solution was to build upwards. However, given the existing height limitations, a well-structured case was presented to the Council to approve a first-floor addition.

By adding a first-floor master suite and rumpus room, we were able to unlock the site's potential. Above the expanded living area, we introduced a modulated two-storey volume, featuring north-facing clerestory windows that channel much-needed natural light deep into the interior. To address Council concerns, we incorporated recycled and reclaimed red bricks and tiles into the design. Internally, a calming material palette creates a tranquil, serene atmosphere throughout the home.

"The floorplan uniquely spills out around this central outdoor space, as the original part of the house was converted into a wing of bedrooms for their three kids".
