The objective was to design a comfortable, functional home for a family of five, incorporating an integrated studio and client meeting space. Working within the constraints of a 306sqm site and a heritage overlay, we transformed a 1940s single-storey clinker brick house, originally part of the Richmond Racecourse estate, into a contemporary family home.

Our design aimed to surprise visitors, contrasting the modest 1940s exterior with an unexpected interior experience. Upon entry, the timber-lined front door leads to a side passage, revealing a vibrant brick wall and a light-filled living room. Above, a timber-clad studio box adds texture and warmth, while clerestory windows open up a double-height volume above the kitchen and living areas. The transition from the original house to the modern extension is gradual, with the full design perspective unfolding from the roof terrace, where the synthesis of old and new becomes clear.

Internally, the original three bedrooms were renovated, the bathroom expanded, and the kitchen reconfigured to create a compact bedroom zone within the existing structure. New additions at the rear and side bring abundant natural light through clerestory windows, skylights, and sliding glass doors that connect to the backyard. The roof was raised to create additional storage and green space, enhancing outdoor play and entertainment areas.

Energy efficiency was a key consideration, achieved through a well-insulated building envelope, exposed concrete slab with hydronic heating, reverse brick veneer walls, and brick piers. This approach minimizes heating and cooling needs, with no heating required from September to May.
