CMR Studio

Purchased in 2021, this property presented a unique opportunity to reimagine an original 1980s project home that was awkwardly positioned at a 9-degree angle to the boundaries. The existing structure posed several limitations: low ceilings, small bedrooms, single-glazed windows, a lack of connection between living spaces and the outdoors, and a garage occupying the prime northern position. However, the true potential of the site lay in its exceptional location, backing onto a remnant Moonah forest within Barwon Heads Village Park.

The brief called for a light-filled, comfortable home with four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a home studio for our business, expansive living areas, and a kitchen suited to Andrew, a skilled home chef. A pool was also a key feature, influencing the design and guiding the optimal positioning of the home. Once the pool's location was determined, the rest of the spaces naturally aligned, ensuring a visual connection to the central outdoor space. Despite the constraints of the original structure, we maximized the potential of the site while maintaining the integrity of our budget.

The design aimed to evoke the feeling of a permanent holiday—a sanctuary that combines light-blue pool waters, whitewashed walls, natural materials, and an emphasis on natural light. The home is a welcoming, airy environment, designed for relaxation and effortless living. We wanted a place where our family could unwind and reconnect, with spaces to play and entertain, while encouraging our kids to invite friends over for years to come.

Connection is at the heart of this design. It’s about fostering relationships—with family, the environment, and the community. Almost every room in the house offers a view of the central pool, anchoring the home and reflecting calming light throughout the day. The playful energy of our children and their friends brings it to life. From our bedroom and living areas, we enjoy views of the sky and the canopy of the Moonah forest. We wave to neighbours from the studio and kitchen as they stroll through the park loop, and we can see our kids playing in the rumpus room across the courtyard.

Large glass corner doors slide away, disappearing into timber-clad nibs, seamlessly connecting the living space to a protected private courtyard and backyard, blurring the line between indoors and out. A sliding gate opens the alfresco area into the village park, extending the home’s reach into the broader community, just a short walk from the playground, sports facilities, and the main street beyond. This home not only provides the space our family needs but also nurtures a strong sense of connection to the landscape, community, and each other.

"The floorplan uniquely spills out around this central outdoor space, as the original part of the house was converted into a wing of bedrooms for their three kids".

"The house is now a light, bright, and inviting environment, where we can relax, linger, and always look forward to coming home. Living and working here had to feel effortless".
